Bluthner pianos are sought after instruments and the Bluthner name is well known as one of the ‘three bs’, ranked alongside Bosendorfer and Bechstein as top class manufacturers. Bluthner have been making pianos in Leipzig in East Germany since 1853 and even though they were nationalised in 1972 the firm has remained under family management to this day. Committed to the production of superb pianos from the finest materials Bluthner remain one of the worlds leading manufacturers and it is a real pleasure to experience some of the Bluthner pianos first hand in our showroom.
The model D is one of the worlds best compact upright pianos standing at 116cms tall with an elegant aesthetic, it would make a refined addition to most domestic settings. Its good looks are really the least of its virtues though and within minutes of playing I knew this was high quality upright piano, certainly one of the best I have been fortunate enough to experience. The tone of the new Bluthner upright is quite remarkable, especially for a piano of this size. The Bluthner tone is highly regarded, beloved of pianists throughout history, Arthur Rubenstein and John Lennon are two well known enthusiasts and it is not hard to understand why. In ‘The Piano Book’ Larry Fine reviews the Bluthner sound in very positive terms;
‘Bluthner Pianos have a very full sound that is warm, romantic and lyrical, generally deeper and darker than some of its west German counterparts’
The Bluthner Model D really does pull you in, and I can imagine one could easily lose hours to those incredible sonorous tones. Built using the finest of materials the Bluthner model D should be a definite possibility for anyone looking for a top quality upright piano. There may be some eyebrows raised over the cost, some might consider a grand piano to be a better investment at this price point. But when it is considered that the Bluthner is more affordable than comparable uprights from manufacturers such as Bosendorfer and Fazioli, this upright piano is an attractive prospect for the discerning pianist. A highly recommended upright piano from The Piano Shop Bath.
