The piano manufacturing firm of C. Bechstein was established in 1853 by Carl Bechstein in Berlin, Germany who developed his instruments during the heyday of 19th century Romanticism.
Carl spent time in France and learned their methods of action and piano making, and also took in the English ideas of piano craftsmanship as well. It was then that he left France and started his own factory in 1853. Carl Bechstein died in 1900 and his sons Johann, Carl, and Edwin assumed responsibilities for continuing the company. Carl Bechstein set out to manufacture a piano able to withstand the great demands imposed on the instrument by the virtuosi of the time, such as Franz Liszt.
The 1873 Bechstein Model V we offer here was originally manufactured during the heyday of West German piano manufacture. Little has changed regarding classical instruments such as in this Model V.
During 2020, the piano was fully restored in our workshops (probably beyond its former glory) with wrest plank, strings, tuning pins, action and a polyester black gloss body.
The piano is a pleasure to play; in fact it feels like a new piano because of the amount of work that has been carried out. Many of the components such as the German ‘Abel’ hammers with roller action and full re-stringing are generally of higher quality today than were available when the piano was first manufactured.
This piano features a warm tone with clarity in all the registers and has a responsive medium action. It is capable of playing delicate passages as well as big powerful tones, making it suitable for all levels of pianists.
All pianos purchased from The Piano Shop Bath include free UK mainland delivery (ground floor) and a complimentary first tuning. Call us to reserve this instrument.
