It has been nearly a year since we became one of the first UK stockists of the new Kawai K series in our Bath showroom. To celebrate the one year anniversary of these outstanding upright pianos we bring you some essential information on three of the most popular Kawai upright pianos the Kawai K200, Kawai K300 and Kawai K500.
It has been a good year for Kawai, with the brands reputation and standing growing in the industry, and it is not hard to understand why. In 1895 one of the most renowned European piano manufacturers Wilhelm Grotrian Sr said to his two sons who were about to succeed him;
‘Lads build good pianos and the rest will take care of itself’
The truth of this statement is born out in the enduring popularity of Kawai pianos, the K-3 was named acoustic piano of the year for four consecutive years. The new K series builds on the success of its predecessors, various design features enable pianists to express exactly what they want to from their upright piano. This ensures the Kawai K200, K300 and K500 are first rate upright pianos for pianists of all abilities.
Taking Design Inspiration From Shigeru Kawai and GX Grand Pianos
The new k series all benefit from the employment of the most up to date technology which has four main implications for all the k series pianos.
- Great Build quality. All materials used in the build of the piano are of the highest quality. From frame bolts to strong back posts, to the steel reinforcement on the keyslip and keybed to protect the integrity of the cabinet, no detail has been over looked in the construction of these pianos.
- Amazing tonal characteristics. The wonderful warm and consistent tone and broad dynamic range of the kawai k series owes much to the solid spruce tapered soundboard, the larger soundboard area and the longer length of the bass strings. Other design features that enhance the tone of the Kawai K series are the underfelted hammers and the bridges that are made from select hard maple.
- Wonderful playability. These are the features that help pianists get the most from the piano in terms of aiding the quality of their expression. All the pianos in the k series benefit from the Millennium iii action which allows for a stronger faster action that offers more power, better control and greater stability than most actions. The hammers in the k series are all made from mahogany wood which helps to create a lighter, faster and very responsive keystroke. The pivot length of the keys is also longer than many conventional upright models. This creates a greater feeling of control and a better overall feel, comparable to the keys of a grand piano.
- Classic good looks. The cabinet design of the new k-series is very pleasing. The Kawai k200, k300 and k500 all have a wider music rack that extends to 100cm and the topboard of the range is a beautiful single plate. The concept behind this new design was ‘sophisticated simplicity’ and the result is a Kawai upright piano that look every bit as good as it sounds.
