The Piano Shop Bath has a busy in-house workshop and we have recently completed restoration work on a 1902 Style 7 Bluthner Grand Piano. Restoring an old piano is a precise and complicated process so it is always fascinating to offer some insight into the journey these pianos take when they come into our workshop. The picture to the left shows how little work had been done on this 100 year old grand piano during its lifetime. The strings were rusty and the tone in the bass had been almost completely lost; additionally, there was a split in the soundboard.
This grand piano has now been completely restrung with new rest pins and new bearing cloth. The hammers have been refaced and the frame has been reguilded, the action has been serviced and regulated, and the case restored to its original pristine finish. The end result is that a much loved family heirloom has been given a completely new lease of life. Thanks to the work so carefully carried out by our restoration team this Bluthner grand piano can now be enjoyed by a new generation of pianists. To the right you can see the end result of fitting new strings and new rest pins. The tone produced by this grand piano is now beautifully balanced and warm after its expert restoration.
To the left you can see the results of the intricate work that goes into refacing the original Bluthner hammers. When it arrived, the Bluthner hammers had lost a great deal of shape and were almost completely flat on the nose. The resurfacing process restores the original shape, as well as giving them a thorough clean up.
