In the Piano Shop Bath, we constantly stock a variety of English upright pianos dating back to the 1910’s. English pianos are built to a high quality and made to last. The three English pianos we currently have in our showroom are Kemble, Welmar and John Broadwood & Sons, all of which are greatly respected piano manufacturers.
Originating in London, Kemble were regarded as one of the best English piano manufactures in the UK. Kemble uprights have a refined responsive keyboard action and a warm British tone that’s clear and warm in nature. They are best known for their small compact pianos which were made to a very high quality, the ‘Compact’ being the famous out of these. Kemble also made the respected Yamaha pianos for the English market, choosing Kemble as Yamaha’s European manufacturing partners.
You will find Welmar pianos almost anywhere from schools to churches, they are renowned for high quality construction producing sturdy and reliable pianos. Welmar also spent most of their years in London before moving their factory to Stroud in the 1990’s. With its consistent responsive action and clear bright tone, Welmar pianos were loved across the nation filling homes with music and love. Before the war, Welmar imported Bluthner pianos and learned a lot from their craftsmanship, implementing it to their own to truly bring out what a piano was capable of.
The Broadwood lineage is distinguished and well established. John Broadwood & Sons began producing pianos in 1808 in London and holds a Royal Warrant. As well as supplying numerous instruments to members of the royal family over the centuries, Queen of Spain as one example, John Broadwood & Sons pianos have also been appreciated by many great composers. Beethoven kept a Broadwood piano his whole life. Overall they produce a warm British tone and medium action, and in most cases come in fantastic looking cases.
