The Piano Shop Bath recently supplied a fine Yamaha grand piano to the Subscription Rooms in Stroud, where Stroud Choral Society were holding a concert. On Saturday 13 June 2015, Stroud Choral Society performed a program that included Rossini’s exquisite Messe Solennelle, plus music from two more greats, Verdi and Mascagni. Although all three composers are known primarily for their operatic works, all of them wrote music in other forms, paticuarly in sacred music. Rossini’s Messe Solennelle being a prime example.
Stroud Choral Society has a long history, with its beginnings in the first part of the nineteenth century, following the opening of the Subscription Rooms in October 1834. Concerts at the Subscription Rooms have been a mainstay of the the choir’s program ever since.
Stroud Choral Society have been getting good reviews; the Gloucester Citizen newspaper wrote of their performance of Duruflé’s Requiem, ‘the choir to displayed its warm cantabile singing. Stroud Choral Society did not disappoint – they followed the ebb and flow with sustained, silky, smooth tone and plenty of air around the sound.’
Their next concert will be on Saturday 14th November 2015 at Tewkesbury Abbey, featuring Elgar’s ‘The Music Makers’, Walton Belshazzar’s ‘Feast’, and Holst’s ‘Hymn to Jesus’.
