Pianos are sensitive creatures. Much like us, they respond to their environments and need some stability to thrive.
Fluctuations in temperature can severely affect a piano as it expands and contracts with the rise and fall of heat. Multiple cycles of expansion and contraction can destroy its inner workings and make it difficult to tune.
Black pianos are particularly susceptible as they absorb more heat than lighter coloured ones, resulting in an even faster cycle of expansion and contraction. But all pianos, irrespective of colour, must be protected from changeable conditions.
Always keep your piano away from windows, radiators and other direct sources of humidity and heat. And, if your home is fitted with underfloor heating, why not install a made-to-measure mat?
Designed with a heat shield to guard your piano from radiant floors, our bespoke piano carpets are damp resistant, easily self-installed and suitable for almost all surfaces. They also provide additional sound proofing and come in a range of colours. Just drop us a line to let us know what size you need and we will see to the rest.
It’s really important to look after your piano and keep its temperature as stable as you can. Piano Shop Bath Owner, Jon Kelly, says:
There are so many factors that affect a piano’s performance, like seasonal changes, how often it’s played, changes in humidity, and so on. And, as an instrument with many wooden parts, it’s incredibly susceptible to temperature.
Underfloor heating is a great way to heat your home, but the effect on your piano can be disastrous. A piano carpet is such a simple solution. It’s an excellent way to fortify your instrument.
