We often have good examples of Bechstein upright pianos at The Piano Shop Bath, so here is brief guide to one of the most respected names in piano manufacturing. Founded in Berlin in 1853, C. Bechstein is one of the world’s longest established and most highly esteemed piano manufacturers, and one of the ‘Big Four’ builders: Steinway, Bosendorfer, Bechstein and Bluthner. Bechstein pianos were favoured by pianists and composers from Franz Liszt to Oscar Peterson and from Freddie Mercury to Claude Debussy, who said: ‘Piano music should only be written for the Bechstein’.
High quality German and British pianos from 1880 to 1940 are among the finest ever made, and are of such quality that, after a thorough restoration by our dedicated team of restorers, they will continue to play beautifully for decades to come. At The Piano Shop Bath, we always keep a good selection of thoroughly restored pre-war British and German pianos, both uprights and grands.
The 1898 C. Bechstein upright pictured below has just come to us from our workshops after a full restoration, including a rebuilt action and flawless repolished rosewood case. This piano has the Bechstein tone: full, warm and powerful without being overly bright or strident. The touch is, again, typically Bechstein, a refined, responsive, medium weight action which is a joy to play – the ivory keys are a real treat and, along with the full 88-note keyboard (quite uncommon on older instruments) help make this piano a real player’s instrument. Our showroom is open Tuesday – Sunday, this piano must be played to be fully appreciated!
