How often should I get my piano tuned?
The recent changes in temperature are usually a good reminder that now is the time to get your piano tuned. Fluctuations in temperature and humidity all impact on your pianos performance. A piano is comprised of hundreds of parts, many of which are made from wood. Wood expands and contracts with humidity and changes in temperature, which directly impacts on a piano’s tuning. If you open up your grand piano you’ll see the piano strings wrapped round tuning pins, which are screwed into the pin block. This is made of wood and is subject to the normal fluctuations in humidity of any home. Even the smallest of movements over a period of months can slightly move the tuning pin, resulting in a string going out of tune.
Our piano technicians and any good piano manufacturer will recommend tuning your piano at least twice a year. Coincidentally this usually ties with the changes of temperature when it shifts from cold to hot weather. Of course if you play for several hours a day this can also affect a piano’s tuning, so you may wish to get your piano tuned more than twice a year, depending on your needs.
