The Yamaha U1 and U3 upright acoustic pianos are known for their advanced scale design, which provides a richer tone with an evenly balanced timbre across every key. The hammers have been redesigned to accommodate durability over time and quick responsiveness. The Yamaha U3 is generally considered to produce warmer, richer tones than the U1, mainly due to its longer strings and larger soundboard. However the U1 still holds up on its own, producing beautiful tones with a balanced keyboard action, all in a smaller size cabinet that will suit homes where space is at a premium. It’s easy to hear and see why music departments and conservatoires across the country use both models extensively.

If you’re considering purchasing a pre-owned Yamaha upright piano, a useful way to identify the age of the piano is to consult the serial number. Yamaha include a unique serial number for each line of their instruments, indicating the year that the piano was released. The 7-digit serial number can be found underneath the top lid, located in the top right corner of the iron frame.
