Yesterday we received a delivery of four new Yamaha U3 upright pianos. It is always exciting to get a new cohort of Yamahas in, who doesn’t love the classic black gloss uprights? However, it is always fascinating because each individual pre owned Yamaha piano is slightly different and I love discovering the traits of each new batch, and choosing my favourites of course.
Overview
The Yamaha U3 is a substantial upright piano standing at 131cm tall, the height of this upright piano provides a larger soundboard and longer strings, it is the big soundboard and longer strings that give the Yamaha U3 its powerful dynamic capacity and depth of tone. It is a well known model within music schools because its build quality renders it capable of withstanding rigorous institutional use. It is also commonly used by choirs and ensembles as it has enough power to fill a medium size venue. However, the Yamaha U3 is also such a reliable and good quality upright piano that it remains a popular choice for domestic use, with beginners and advanced pianists alike both keen to utilise the advantages this particular model has to offer.
Two 1982 U3 pianos currently in our showroom
One thing I personally find so interesting about the pre owned Yamaha pianos is that each and every one has different qualities. For example, there are currently two 1982 Yamaha U3s in our showroom so you would think that they might be reasonably similar in terms of tone and touch, after all, they were both manufactured at a similar time in the Yamaha factory in Hammamatsu. Amazingly I found them to be quite distinctive; serial number 3545011 sounded pleasantly aged and mellow compared to 3629858 which sounded almost like a brand new piano. The touch on both was also quite different with 3545011 having a much lighter action than its counterpart. I think this comparison really does go to show that if you are considering buying a pre owned Yamaha upright piano it is very wise to try it in person, alongside several other pianos before you decide on the piano that is right for you. We have seen the piano buying process so many times now and it really is such a personal decision based on individual preferences. At The Piano Shop Bath we always have a good selection of pre owned Yamaha upright pianos so you can compare and critique as much as you need to before you achieve clarity on what is the perfect piano for you. We enjoy this process as much as you and look forward to seeing you in our showroom. For more information on the Yamaha U3s please do call us on 01225 427961.
