‘Studio Upright’, or ‘Professional Upright’, is a term applied to larger upright pianos, which refers to their popular use in recording studios where space might not allow for a grand. Generally speaking, the longer a piano’s strings, the better the tone (especially in the bass register of the keyboard). A studio upright will have strings as long as those of a baby grand, but will take up much less space. Typically, studio uprights are used in concert venues, recording studios and by piano teachers and advanced pianists who need a capable, versatile instrument. Both Yamaha and Kawai pianos are well known for their high quality studio uprights, and of course pre-war British and German pianos, such as those by Broadwood, Bechstein, Steinway, Bluthner and others, are among the finest ever made.
We always keep a small selection of studio uprights in stock, usually a refurbished Yamaha U3 and a brand new Kawai K6. We often also have fully restored pre-war large uprights in stock, like this 1920 Broadwood and this 1898 Bechstein. At present (26.5.13) we also have a lightly used German-built 2003 Bluthner Concert B.
