Knight Pianos were a relatively young British make, having been established in 1936 and lasting until 2003. Knight made a small number of traditional uprights and baby grands in their London factory until the 1960s when they began to specialise in the new ‘Small Modern’ case style, the popularity of which was driven by the prevalence of small homes after the war. Almost all Knight pianos are small modern uprights, usually in mahogany, rosewood or teak finishes, with black gloss finishes being much rarer.
Knight pianos are extremely well made, with top quality materials used in the soundboard, frame and action, and the sturdily constructed case. These instruments are very long-lasting and restore very well, as well as being very resilient to changes in temperature and to being moved. The K10 small modern upright (pictured below) is a very fine small piano and a good alternative to a pre-owned Yamaha if a warmer, fuller tone or natural wood case is preferred.
The touch and tone is typically British, with a clear yet warm tone and playable, responsive keyboard action.
