At the Piano Shop Bath we have a beautiful Welmar grand piano on our showroom floor. The piano is from the pre war period and features some lovely design work from that period. High quality German and British pianos from 1880 to 1940 are among the finest ever made, and are of such quality that, after a thorough restoration by our dedicated team of restorers, they will continue to play beautifully for decades to come. Established in London in 1876, Whelpdale, Maxwell and Codd – later known as Welmar – began as the British importer for highly esteemed German Bluthner pianos. In the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, Bluthner built very fine instruments and were known particularly for their domestic baby grands and large uprights. Having learned from the high manufacturing standards of Bluthner pianos, Welmar began to produce their own instruments in Britain, with the Welmar grand piano especially being heavily based on Bluthner designs. Though the name is now a little forgotten, Welmar instruments are known for their high quality and sturdy construction and often restore very well.
The touch and tone of this Welmar grand piano are typically British: a medium weight, responsive touch and a rich tone. This piano has a singing treble a wonderfully deep bass for a small instrument (4’10”), testament to the design’s noble German origins, as well as a delightful ivory keyboard, a real treat for any serious player. This piano has been fully restored, including new string, a rebuilt action and a newly French Polished case with a deep mahogany finish. The case is in a subtly elegant pre-war British Art Deco style, with square tapered legs and sleek lines, and would make a handsome addition to any home.
