Piano stools are designed specifically for sitting at the piano. It sounds silly, but as any piano teacher will tell you, good technique begins by sitting properly. At the office, the chairs, desks and computer equipment are painstakingly designed to ensure minimum discomfort to the back, neck, arms and hands when using the computer, but many pianists will sit on any old chair to practice for hours at a time. Professional musicians, and pianists in particular, must be very careful to use proper technique, or a gruelling practice and performance schedule can be very damaging physically. Even if you only play for half an hour at a time, good posture makes playing the piano a much less physically demanding (and therefore much more pleasurable) experience, and it’s almost impossible to achieve good posture when you’re sitting on the wrong chair for the job.
Our piano stools are made in East Sussex by Woodhouse. They come in a range of styles and are made to order in your preferred the wood finish and fabric colour. There are two basic types, the standard box stool and the adjustable stool. The box stool is simply a four-legged stool set at the right height (20″) for someone of roughly average height to be comfortable at the average sized piano. If that’s you, then these stools are £79 and will be very comfortable for many years.
Adjustable stools are the same sort of shape, but the height of the seat can be easily adjusted from 18″ to 21.5″. Adjustable stools are perfect for players who are particularly tall or short, or pianos which are particularly small or large. They are also very popular with parents and children who both play the piano, and both want to be as comfortable as possible. The adjustable stools are £185 and are available in the same range of wood and fabric options as the box stool.
