The K3 is part of the new series of Kawai upright pianos to be fitted with their improved ‘Millennium III’ action. This action was first seen on their top-of-the-line concert grand instruments and has now been redesigned for the K Series uprights. The action employs some ABS-Carbon components, designed to be stiff but light, as well as handcrafted wooden parts, making the piano’s touch very fast and responsive. This piano is a full 4 feet tall and the tone is rich and powerful, rivalling some smaller grand pianos for depth and warmth, though without the overpowering bass sometimes associated with Japanese instruments.
We reccommend the K3 and its smaller brother the K2, to beginners and experienced pianists alike, and also to teachers seeking a sturdy, reliable quality instrument for many years service. This piano is fitted with the Soft Fall System, protecting the piano (and one’s fingers) from the lid slamming shut, and also with a full length music rack, an often overlooked but very useful feature. We like the classic styling of the traditional upright case, which is available in a full range of finishes to suit the modern or traditionally furnished room (gloss black shown below). The K3 won the prestigious American Musical Merchandise Review Piano of the Year in 2008, 09, 10 and 11, and is one of the best-selling acoustic pianos in the world.
